ISP Update / May, 2006
Contents

GREETINGS

Greetings....our May ISP Update provides some snippets of our activities. Our focus is on the ISP Contest and the Policy Conference right now. We hope to renovate the Liaison and Friends sections of the website and add a FAQ section to it as well. We need photos of you or your students in action as policy advocates...if you have some, we will post them on the website. If you have newspaper articles about yourself or students, please send me the link. Check out under What's New what Lori Messinger's students are doing in Kansas.

  • Deadline Passed and Best Total Yet: The 2006 ISP Annnual Contest for BSW and MSW students received 33 MSW and 18 BSW proposals this year. Currently, 28 judges from the ISP membership are assessing and scoring them. We anticipate giving the awards out at the Policy Conference in Washington, DC on Sunday, June 18, 2006 during the awards luncheon at 12:45 PM. These 51 entries are our highest number ever! Get your students ready for next year. Go to: http://www.statepolicy.org/contest/index.html. A summary of the winning entries and all of the participants will go into our ISP archives online this summer. It shows impressively what students (encouraged by their Liaisons/faculty) can accomplish!

  • The Policy Conference, co-sponsored by ISP, will be held in Washington, DC from June 16-19, 2006 at the Mayflower Hotel: the complete program is now available to be reviewed with day, time, presenters, and 50 word abstracts. Please check over the sessions and speakers; there is so much variety that something will convince you to come! Go to:

Registration for the conference is at the following site . http://www.vcu.edu/slwweb/PolicyConf06/PolicyConf06_registration.html

There will be on site registration at the Mayflower Hotel beginning Friday evening, June 16. One-day registration is available only on site at $175.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE CONFERENCE TO ALL OF YOUR LIST SERVES, AGENCIES, ALUMNI GROUPS, EMPLOYEES, FACULTY, ETC.....OUR NUMBERS ARE GOOD, BUT WE NEED YOU TO PROMOTE THIS CONFERENCE TO MAKE IT A MAJOR SUCCESS.....

At the Policy Conference, ISP is sponsoring roundtables on three of our priorities: field placement development at legislative sites; accreditation guidelines for policy practice; and legislative advocacy when your program is more than 50 miles from the state capital.....look for them in the program and feel free to join us in DC.

  • Keep sending in your total visits by social work students to their state capitals. Last year we had 8,078 and our goal this year is 9,000. A month ago we had 1,340. Here is the tally as of 5.18.06: 5,562....we still need more states to report....let me know asap!

  • Thanks to all who paid the annual dues. The reminder brought in many renewals. The ISP membership form is on line at: http://www.statepolicy.org/about_us/index.html. Be on board!

  • Our next ISP auction will be in San Francisco in November, 2007. The date gives us a little breather....but, if you are planning on traveling this summer (and next), please keep ISP in mind....a colleague just left for Tibet...those beautiful but very inexpensive items can be auctioned off at 6-8 times their cost. Please bring a few items back for the auction and let me know. If anyone of you is truly serious about shopping for the auction, let me know and I will give you some cash advance to help you get the best buys and bring them back. E.g., $100 to someone going to Ghana yielded over $600 in the sale of the items.....

  • An article in the Washington Post demonstrates the importance of our ISP mission: active participation in the state policy process. Click on link below to read "States' Rights -- for the Right Ideas" by E. J. Dionne Jr
